Description
A vintage wood poker carousel with red, white, and blue clay (or clay composite / Harvite?) poker chips, an imitation alligator skin cover, and a deck of cards dated 26 June 1933.The date on the cards refers to the first use of an electronic parimutuel betting machine, the “tote board,” by the American Totalisator Company at the Arlington Park racetrack in Chicago. (This was during the time of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, the Century of Progress International Exposition.)
Dark stained wood spinning carousel with chrome handle. Dark brown imitation alligator vinyl cover.
Red, white, and blue stackable chips with a compass star in the middle. 81 white chips, 40 red chips, and 38 blue chips. Chips are matte in color, and their interiors have specks of shine, like bits of mica. One chip weighs 5 grams.
One complete deck of red and yellow cards by Brown & Bigelow. All cards state: “American Five Dollars TOTE, No. 7, First (I) RACE, 1st TOTE 26 JUNE ‘33” and “Win” on the sides. Gold painted edges.
In good preowned condition. Some wear on the wood carousel edges but no chips or cracks, and the carousel spins smoothly. The chrome handle has some oxidation and moves up and down a bit stiffly. The green felt on the bottom is mostly intact, but some spots are worn off. The cover does not have much wear. There are several light white and orange paint marks, though. The orange paint mark runs in a line from the top to the bottom of the side. See the number of each color chip in the description above. Chips are in good shape with mostly minor rubbing wear and some ingrained dust in places, and it appears that only two white chips have a small chip on the side. Cards look nearly new with crisp edges and minor rubbing on sides (I was surprised to see the 1933 date on them). See images for details.
